Scissors, at least, makes sense -- if you have a pair of kitchen
scissors that come apart for cleaning.
But one of the pieces isn't a scissor -- it's half a pair of scissors.
(As we often said in grammar class, "English has many idiots.")
I once poked around, and as far as I could tell there aren't any
synonyms for "pants" that isn't plural -- except for words that are
really synonyms for "G-string". And even there, you don't have one
brief, you have a pair of briefs.
Is the bottom part of a salwar kameez a "salwar" or a "pair of
salwars"? Whatever, when I make a kameez, I intend to wear it with a
matching pair of broadfalls.
It's only going to be a kameez-length tunic anyway. In point of
fact, it's going to be a dress. I'll probably use my daygown pattern.
