I count myself very, very lucky that my first lessons in
sewing were garments that didn't require patterns.
Learning how to follow someone else's pattern and learning
good sewing technique are not related at all. *Some*
patterns are good learning experiences -- but you need a
good teacher to find them among patterns that are exercises
in frustration and those that teach clumsy techniques.
Since the student has already learned how to design her own
patterns, I'd suggest hanging out here, and looking for a
local who can give her one-on-one instruction.
