Anicostyle,

There are many things different about bathing suit construction than
regular sewing. About the only commercial patterns that I know of
that cover the information are Quick Sew patterns.

For example, if you're using real bathing suit fabric, it is cut
crosswise on the fabric rather than lengthwise. You must use needles
expressly meant for knits, and you must use elastic meant for bathing
suits. There are two types; one is a clear, see-through elastic; the
other is a cream colored elastic.

You also have to know how to sew the elastic.

It would help to know what problems you're having, or what questions
you have, so we can give a more definitive answer.

Thanks Teri,
What I'm struggling right now with is the elastic thread part. I took
apart one of my old bathing suits to see the full construction and noticed
that elastic thread was used. I've tried putting the elastic thread in the
bobbin after winding it myself without stretching it at all, while using
regular thread on the top of the machine but that only creates shirring
not stretching. I'm not sure if I'm just winding it too loose or doing
something totally wrong.

I've never known anyone using elastic thread to sew a swimsuit...
Woolly nylon is the usual stuff. Pop over to Stuart's site: he'll put
you straight on all things swimwear shaped! :)

Dear Kate,

Thanks for the website. I start at the top and work down, but the
result looks just like his. Now I have another method to file away.

Stuart is great at this, and has one or two very funny stories about
making swimsuits for his wife.
