It's almost midnight here and I'm a bit sleepy, so when I first read

No. just a potentially soapy finger! But I have done that to may hair
on occasion in the shower, to check I'd rinsed all the hair conditioner
off! My best test yet!

Dear Kate,
The buttons could be horn, ivory, celluloid would date the piece after
1903, animal hoof--all look something like plastic.

In that case, might it not be a good idea to remove the
buttons before laundering? Would extended soaking damage
the natural animal product buttons? Kate said these items
were all from the mid--to-late 19th century IIRC.

Well, that would not surprise me, but they might also be replacement
buttons. Given how well worn and beautifully patched some of the other
things are in this collection, replacing a aet of buttons when the last
one dropped off, or if they were all odd by that time, would be fairly
typical. This item has no date on it. I'll post pix when I can.
