Missed the earlier thread... this is how I handle stuff like that that I
think can handle washing:

1) Soak for several hours in the bathtub with lukewarm water and detergent,
and a fiberglas screen sitting on the bottom of the tub. Lots of water,
minimal agitation.

2) Spread the garment out as flat as I can, floating above the screen, then
lift the screen out of the soapy water. Run the soapy water down the drain and
let the garment drain a few minutes

3) Rinse many, many times right on the screen with the handshower (showerhead
on a hose... lukewarm water and set for the softest spray I can get.

4) Rinse once more with distilled water (I have to use a trigger sprayer
for that -- our water is high in iron and manganese!)

5) Let dry as flat as possible on the screen.

Mumble years ago, as an experiment, I used the paper deacidification method of
treating with a mixture of milk of magnesia and club soda (weak carbonic acid)
on a scrap of badly deteriorated lace that my aunt wanted to put in a shadow
box, directly on the wood :-(
It's held up remarkably well over the last 20 or 30
years -- I think it probably would have been very yellow and brittle by now
otherwise.

I did use the shower on the tap in the conservatory... We have a
'Tap-Adapta' on the sink taps: you get a soft stream or a shower on the
spray setting. Great for rinsing vegetable or the sink, or delicate
clothing! :D

I don't have screens, and we only have one bathroom, so I can't put it
out of comission for a day. I don't think these items are quite that
delicate, and they are certainly not old enough or rare enough to be
museum displat pieces, so I think my bowl and colander set-up will do.

Whoo hoo! Well done!

I don't think these will end up on display anywhere, but I do want to
try to get as good a set of pix as I can, and skim off the patterns.
