None of these suggestions are mutually exclusive, try one or
all:

1. If you have a friend who sews, ask if he/she will give
you some lessons.

2. Pick up a copy of "Reader's Digest Complete Guide to
Sewing" at your library, or (better yet) buy one:
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Sewing-Readers-Digest/dp/0762104201

3. Ask at your local sewing machine or fabric store if they
have lessons or know someone in your community they can
recommend for lessons.

4. Buy a simple pattern, study the instructions *until they
make sense to you*, and dive in.

5. Come on back 'here' for additional help when you are
stumped.

hang out with asian immigrants, any mid sized city will have one of
their churches. they can also teach you how to sharpen a scissors
correctly.

the rice-three-times-a-day thing is a bit lame, but they really do
have the old time skills.
