The sewing:
Vicky's Knickers:

Well, that looks all very nice, truly Victorian indeed. ;-) However, if I
compare the lady with old pictures, it seems that in the olden days they
laced them corsets a bit tighter, or am I wrong. Nothing wrong with lacing
them not soooo very tight, after all nowadays there's hardly a gentleman
around to catch you if you faint; the bastards will probaly just let you
drop and film the whole thing with their mobile phone to put it on youtube.
;-)
Oh, this reminds me: I had long since wanted to ask you if you know this
book: 'A history of costume' by CArl Köhler, Dover books. (Don't ask how I
got it, it's one of those borrowed books that never return, but the guy I
have it from still must have my historical atlas, so there is a balance in
life, the universe and everything.) A whole lot of interesting garments and
their patterns. Pics from the early years of the 20th century with the local
historical society wearing the garments (shudder!) without the proper and
necessary undies of the period (double shudder!). I bet most of the
originals, being property of a Munich museum, died in the flames of WW II,
not being valuable treasures of art but just 'old rags'. I haven't found the
courage (and time) to enquire at the museum so far.

They also laced *all* the time, not just for dress-up. They may have
laced tighter for formal occasions, but everybody wore a corset all
the time. That's what really makes the difference.

Some went in for tighter lacing than others... This particular corset
is designed to have a 2"-4" gap up the back.

I know of it, but haven't laid eyes on it yet.
