Remove rivets from clothing

Hello,

Could I get some advice from all of you more experienced sewers?

I need to remove some riveted-on buttons from an article of clothing so that I can replace them with real buttons. The rivets don't unscrew, but seem to be "popped" together, and are very secure.

Any suggestions about how to remove them without much damage to the cloth?

I can sew but haven't done so for several years. The last sewing I did was to make most of my maternity clothes 19 years ago. Before that, I learned by being a 4-H sewer. I really need to start sewing again because we do Civil War-era dancing, and I'd like to make most of the ball gowns for myself and DD and also things for DH.

You can't, really... They will leave a small hole, which is a pain to sew a button over and always looks a mess.

Good for you! I make historic costumes and wedding toggery! :D

you drill them out with a power drill.

A small hole is OK, as long as it's not a big hole. For our annual history fest, one of our group decided that this year the guys should do an OK Corral shoot-out. My husband gets to be one of the bad guys, and I'm just trying to figure out the easiest and quickest way to transform what we've got into what we need in terms of a vest. The audience won't be close enough to see the holes. Probably.

I guess I could always sew an entire vest for him, but I don't have time to shop for fabric and to sew right now, and doubt if I can find the time before the event.

Maybe if I'm really nice, I can convince my best friend to do it for me.

If that works, I think it's time for DH to do his part to putting this costume together.

Thanks to both of you.

Just a thought------why not paint or color the riveted buttons the same color as the garment, and just glue on the kind of buttons you want........if they won't be able to see the holes, they won't be able to tell the buttons are glued on either..........do you think that might work??

Now that's literally an example of the "galloping horse" detail/repair scenario! (i.e. if the boo boo can't be noticed by someone galloping past, don;t worry about it.)

I've removed grommet-like fasteners with pliers, sometimes with nippers. Does leave a hole, but generally that can be used to position the button or whatever is going on top.

If no one will be close enough to see the holes where the buttons used to be, you might consider just placing a patch under the holes and zig-zag to hold the patch on. Then sew a different button on using your machine. HTH Barbara in FL

End nippers work fine for this... I just tried 'em. e.g.:

oh ho-ho!!! Once more unto the husband's roll around good friends!! I know my DH has a pair of those around here somewhere. He'll be thrilled to know yet another of his tools could now see service in the sewing room. lol

---my best suggestion for removing rivet buttons was pry it open with a screwdriver and cuss a whole lot. So I'm glad to see other easier suggestions!
