My jacket has metal snap buttons that need to be replaced. How do you
take them off? I tried prying them off with a butter knife and
screwdriver without success. Thanks for your advice.

You won't be able to re-use the snaps.

Get a pair of pliers (regular ones, needle-nose won't work as well) and
squeeze the smap body towards an oval shape. This will release the
fabric interface that it's presently hanging onto. Some snaps will need
squeezing in one direction, then the other (make the oval north-south,
then squeeze it back so it ovals east-west). Done carefully, the only
fabric effect will be the original hole made for the snap.

You might start with the least conspicuous snap, to get the hang of it.
