I've given up on leather needles. I just use a new sharp needle (size
16 or 18) and set the stitch length to no more than 6 or 7 stitches per
inch. My Kenmore couldn't handle really heavy thread (upholstery
thread), but I found that plain old double strength polyester Guttermann
thread was fine.
