Does anyone know of a site that gives tips on teaching kids sewing lessons?
I'm teaching my daughter and would like some tips and projects for her to
do. Thank you!

Bonnie,
How old is your daughter? Are you going to teach her to use the machine or
hand sew? I taught kids from age 7 and up on the machine. First, after safety
instructions (don't sew your fingers!!!) we practiced on scraps to learn how
to sew straight. Next we made simple pull string bags...even if they weren't
sewing that straight they came out fine and they were fast...a little
instant gratification to urge them on. After that it was onto elatic waist
shorts.
There are sites out there with info like this one...

You can google 'teach kids to sew' and see what comes up.

I just googled 'sewing lessons' and got a large amount of stuff. Some is
actually for advanced study but most seem to be for a novice audience.
However, I did not see one that is local to me that advertises regularly in
the sewing magazines. So I put the name of the town the person lives in and
came up with it right off. www.youcanmakeit.com
Just trying to support local business and meet your need at the same time.
After all 80% of employment is in small business.

Hope this helps,

Depending on what level or stage you want to introduce to them, you
may want to consider a no-sew project to make clothes for dolls. My
friend developed this and uses it with her neices; her mother also
uses it with children at a local school that she works with. In both
cases, the girls learn (very) basic concepts of construction and they
get to personalize things a bit. The technique involves preparing a
'kit' for the sewers-to-be prior to meeting with them. When you are
together with the young sewers, you can supervise while they velcro
back and front pieces of a garment together, add embellishments, and
dress their dolls. It's been a big hit for both sets of children (the
neices and the local students), and the article has also gotten some
very positive feedback from the forum where it is posted
(www.patternreview.com). You can read the article that describes how
to do it here:

I taught sewing to both adults and children for several years. I would
look at the Sewing Prose pattern system. It is meant for either sewing
teachers or parents to use, and helps the kids to build on skills, with
a reward system built in. The patterns are cute, too, and developed
especially for kids.

The You Can Make It system is meant for adults. Sewing Prose is designed
specifically for kids.
