That looks more like a serial number than a model number...
Yup - looks like a 1956 class 15 machine, one of 50,000 made in 1956!
:) If you have the manual available, that should tell you exactly which
model of type 15 it is. I have a 15-88, a treadle, but they also made
them as hand cranks and with electric motors. Mine is on my web site
(URL below), in the Sewing Machine gallery: does your mother's look
similar?
If you want to try to fix it yourself, you need to identify the problem,
and if a part is broken, take the part number off it. Don't start
dismembering the poor thing until we know what the actual problem is!

If you DON'T fancy fixing it yourself, they will help you find a good
local repair person.
