Katie, Katie,
how does your classroom grow?
With fabric scraps,
and pin mishaps,
and sewing machines
all in a row!
I was in school this morning, with a bunch of 10 YO's, making collage
things of peoples innards (hm... It's science week next week! Look,
just don't ask... ), and the kids had great fun with fabrics, pins
(dropped a few - thank the Lord for magnetic pin holders!), beads,
buttons, glue, and sewing machines! There were 11 kids, two teachers,
and 3 sewing machines, and they all behaved impeccably! I took the
Featherweight, the Elna Lotus, and the Viscount 2000, which does fancy
stitches.
We divided the group in two for sewing tutorials, and they each got a go
on two or three different machines. Bruce was the best (other than
James, who is quite good with the machine), which was very encouraging:
he usually has concentration problems!
I REALLY love this sort of pressure-off teaching. I must get pix
tomorrow, of the kids sewing and the completed projects.

Only 11 of the little d...ears? Bliss! Year 6 science week ... great
fun. My 14yo is now on with making his first pair of trousers.

It's a mixed age group class of about 24. One kid is absent - fell off
a skate board and seriously bashed his face! The Year Six kits are all
doing SAT's this week, so only the Year Fives are doing the project.

Will love the pix. Isn't it a great feeling to see a child such as you say
Bruce is, completing something and being "the best".

That sounds like a lot of fun, not like the dreadful needlework lessons we
did at school. It was years before I could face a sewing machine again and
realised that sewing is very enjoyable not terrifying!
