Hello,

I have a question regarding sewing patches onto a leather vest. My
son dropped off his vest with 5 patches in various sizes. After doing
a bit of research online I found sites recommending using polyester or
nylon thread. They said cotton thread reacts badly with the chemicals
left after the leather is tanned. My trip the TSWLTH netted the
perfect thread color in 100% rayon. Does anyone know if that presents
any problem with leather. I hate to redo these patches a couple
months down the road. I also found information regarding stitch
lenght, needle size, and a caution to be extra careful that the lining
doesn't get caught because ripping and stitching again is not a good
idea. I did not, however, find any suggestions for how to hold these
patches still while sewing. I had my son put on the vest and then
taped the patches with plain old Scotch tape. Everytime I moved the
vest, the tape popped off. After a few trys, and many strips of tape,
they finally stayed put. One of my supply catalogs has a product
called "505 Spray and Fix" adhesive spray. It's supposed be
repositionable. Since my son plans to send his new motorcycle club
buddies to me with their vests I thought I'd better check on the patch
sticking problems. Any suggestions on this subect?

By the way, I found 27 junk messages in the first 30 postings on this
group. Is there any way to stop these people?

Thanks for your help,

Liz W.

i have some ideas regarding your news group configuration

it looks like you are accessing the alt.sewing news/usenet group through
Google via google groups

alt.sewing is a **public** news group so any one can post any message (an
honor system) if it were a **moderated** group then someone would prevent
access by spammers and their offending messages

if you use news reader software to access news groups you can usually
configure to ignore and not diplay certain types of messages.

Rayon, like cotton, is cellulose. Except rayon is a much weaker fiber
than cotton, generally speaking.

I'd probably take 'em down to the shoe repair guy, who does nice work
and has the correct machines and thread.

Sadly, no. This is Usenet (Google the term if you are not familiar with
it) and unlike Yahoo groups Usenet is not moderated. The regular
posters sometimes try to remind newbies and junk posters about usenet
'rules' but those who post garbage and ads tend to just jump in and not
read the newsgroup FAQs or charters....

However using a news reader program such as Agent (and not using Google
groups which utilizes a browser interface) allows you to filter
unpalatable subject lines and authors.

Thanks to you all for your help. I'll stick with this group even
though I cannot block the junk messages. It's still a great place to
get help.
