I'm a novice here so bear with me.

I have in front of me a new, never been used Singer "Prelude"
sewing machine.

My conclusion is the machine is defective, as follows: when
the machine's wheel is rotated so that the take-up lever is at its
highest point, the take-up lever still does not protrude sufficiently
from the housing of the machine to expose its eyelet. Thus,
it is impossible to thread the machine.

Am I correct in my conclusion, or is there some adjustment
or technique that I am missing?

Thanks,

Steve

I can't find a Singer Prelude, only the Husqvarna one...

Most take-up levers on modern machines do not protrude much and some not
at all at this point. There is no eye to poke the thread through.
Instead you hook the thread round the back, as the take-up lever is
shaped like a sort of long hook.

Have you checked the threading diagram in your owner's manual for pix of
what it looks like and the exact thread path at this point?

You can see the machine on the Singer website. It is an 8280 Prelude.
(It can be found under "products" and then under "basic machines".

It has lay-in threading (I answered this same query over in
crafts.textiles.sewing which it is also posted to).

Hi, thanks for your reply, and my apologies for multi-posting.

The person sitting next to me successfully threaded the machine
based on your description. (But the physical instruction booklet
looks nothing like it; it shows a protruding arm, with an eyelet
above the machine housing and a thread going through it... this
is not the case!)

Thanks a million, we were perplexed and on the verge of
taking the machine back to Target. ;)

Steve - Most of us would tell you to TAKE IT BACK TO TARGET WHILE YOU CAN -
then go to a sewing machine store and find a vintage (used/pre-loved)
machine that weighs a ton and will sew beautifully for your and several of
your descendents lifetimes. This machine is going to be nothing but trouble
and make sewing frustrating for you. There is a document on how to buy a
used sewing machine that gets posted here frequently - I haven't got it
saved on my new PC - can someone post it again? Ah - here it is - found it
on Google Groups - http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm - feel free to
ask more questions - this is a wonderfully helpful group!
