I'm making Suitability pattern #5300 (front zip version) for a friend:
http://www.suitability.com/item.cfm?catID=151&invID=757
I've got the muslin done and she came by for a fitting last night and
everything looks great except for the sleeve. She needs a little bit
more room in the upper and/biceps area - maybe only 1/2" to 3/4". The
armseye seems okay as it is and the pattern fits smooth across the back.
The drawing on the website doesn't show it but the sleeve is made in two
parts - the upper sleeve and the under sleeve. We're doing the garment
in two contrasting fabrics - the center front, center back, collar and
upper sleeve in a pretty brocade and the side panels and under sleeve in
a heavy dull satin. Because of this I want to be especially sure that
everything will still line up correctly after I make my adjustment.
How can I accomplish the necessary adjustment without distorting
anything else? I suspect I'm making this more complicated than it needs
to be but I've never done this particular type of modification before
and I'd rather not reinvent the wheel...

Dear Kathleen
If your client really needs only 3/4 inch, you can slash the upper
sleeve from the dot at the shoulder to the bottom, and spread the
sleeve open that much. By just going to the shoulder dot instead of
the edge, you won't change the armscye at all. But if she needs more
than that, the alteration must be more elaborate. Let us know.

Thanks Teri. I'll try this first and see if it gives her what she
needs. Actually, she was satisfied with the initial fit; I'm the one
who noticed the problem with the sleeves. I think she's so used to
crappy fit from ready-to-wear that some minor pulling across the biceps
goes unnoticed.

Kathleen--
I don't have any help to offer, but i am looking forward to hearing
about how this goes. I bought the same pattern--my intention is to
start working on show clothes for my almost 13 year old after
christmas.
what kind of fabric did you use??? what tips/hints/help can you give
me? i readily admit, i am a quilter who has made the odd pair of pj
bottoms.
