I don't drive, as many of you know. I also live in what amounts to a
fabric desert. A visit to somewhere that actually sells cloth and cloth
related items is a treat, when you usually have to buy on line and end
up guessing a lot as to quality or shade. So yesterday I went shopping
at Bluewater, with a friend, and we dropped into John Lewis's large
department store. It has a nice fabric department. I don't often buy
fabric there because it's more expensive than most of the places I can
get the same stuff from on line or direct from the mills in the case os
silk and wool...
But Coats thread is much the same wherever... I wanted a nice dark red
in both cotton and silk, and a dusty lilac/lavender in silk. They had
both. Unfortunately their computerized tills and stock management
system was having a sulk and it took the lovely young man who served me
THREE QUARTERS OF AN HOUR to dig out the price of two 80m reels of silk
thread.
And they had sold out of the other two things I wanted: a pattern for a
friend so I can make an outfit for her to wear to her daughter's
wedding, and some white disposable dress shields.
The staff who served me did their best, and I have nothing but praise
for their unfailing helpfulness, persistence, and charm in frustrating
circumstances, but it really is no wonder I frequently prefer to shop on
line.
So I'm having a strop before breakfast, and then I'm ordering the
pattern from someone else because I can get it quicker doing that than
waiting 3 weeks for it to go through Johnny Loulou's system, which, like
the needless Alexandrine, drags its slow length along...

Which is why so many of us order on line.
The aggravation of going into a brick and mortar store can be maddening,
no matter how good the service. There was a time things could be found
in the back room or on a sheet of paper. Now there is no back room and
if it's not listed in the computer you have to wait forever to figure
out what something costs or just exactly the right words to use in the
search.
I will stamp my feet along with you. Better luck next time you go
shopping off line.

Wow. I commend you for your patience. I am pretty sure my head would have
exploded. I know and understand it isn't the clerk's fault. And I would
have tried to not be nasty to him. But I'm just really sure my brain would
have burst and run out my ears.
Maybe it's time to add a hip flask to the list of emergency supplies I
already carry in my purse.....just to be on the safe side. LOL

I did suggest he'd earned a nice beer when he went off duty! :D
I had plenty of time and he was trying so hard. It was quite a giggle,
really.
