Our daughter is expecting her first child, a girl.

I have the skirt from my mother's wedding dress. It is about 2 yards of a
brocade with a small pattern in it. It has yellowed to the most beautiful
soft almost beige color. I suspect it may be nylon, if not then satin of
some sort. She wore it in 1946 and she said nylon had just came out. She
took the dress apart to remove the tulle (nylon) that had turned brown, and
the top was lost somewhere. My great grandmother made the dress.

So, I am trying to think of something to make my daughter for her baby out
of it. Of course the first thing I thought of was a Christening gown, but
the other grandma is doing that already. And I really don't think there is
enough to make a nice one from.

I can't think of anything else? Does anyone have any ideas? Years ago they
wore little short jackets over Christening gowns, but it really isn't
something you see now.

Thank you for the help.

Hi;

Since she is already going to have a christening gown (which is
what I usually make old wedding gowns into), I would suggest that you
make a large padded scrapbook/photo album for her photographs & a
fancy decorative pillow (You should have enough fabric for both
items). Both of these would be very wonderful keepsakes for her when
she is grown, and be useful and seen long after the christening gown
is forgotten.

I like the pillow idea a lot. I could even make a ruffled pillow, since I
probably won't be able to find lace to go with it.

Thank you for the idea...

Anyone else with another idea?

Love,

Will the baby be getting a baby ring? A small lined drawstring bag for a
ring w/ a lovely (some people keep baby teeth (I didn't, but I know it's
done), a small bag for that would be nice as well.
Don't forget to tag the item that you make so that the baby (when grown)
will know what the items were made from.
As a mother, I would find a small keepsake quilt and bag set to be a nice
gift. I also like the idea of a book cover. Is your family religious?
Would a cover for a Bible be appropriate? I'm not sure if a baby gets a
bible for a christening.

Is the wedding dress not 'complete,' then (i.e. not wearable as is)? If
so why not just save the fabric for when the baby grows up... Perhaps
that little one could someday use it in *her* wedding dress....
