Try a Kwik Sew pattern. I've had good results with them. Stretch & Sew
do a fantastic little book called Sewing With Knits that will give you
lots of hints. The important things to remember are:
Needles: use a Super Stretch needle (Schmetz brand are best to my mind),
as this is made for Lycra fabrics.
Thread: for an ordinary sewing machine, use good quality polyester
thread. For sergers I advise using good quality 120's serger thread in
the needles and a good quality woolly nylon or textured bulk polyester
in the loopers.
Stitches: serging is best. Otherwise use a narrow zigzag and a small
stitch ((about 2.5mm) rather than a 'stretch' or 'overlock' stitch on
the sewing machine. A walking or even feed presser foot also helps.
Remember that swimsuits have 'negative ease' - the garment pieces will
be SMALLER than your body measurements!

Aren't you the same person who made two skirts and neither of them fit?
If so, it's probably a good idea for you to learn to work with
non-stretch fabric and get used to sewing before you try a swimsuit.

Dear Christine,
Some tips on sewing swimwear. The pattern pieces should be cut
crosswise on bathing suit fabric--in fact, if there is a print on the
fabric, it will be in the crosswise direction.
Practice sewing elastic. In plain (not much stretch) areas, the
elastic should be held taut, but not stretched very much; in areas that
need stretching, the elastic should be stretched twice as long, and the
fabric should also be stretched (around the butt, especially). Doing
the proper amount of stretch was always a learning experience for my
students, but once learned, you can make a half dozen suits for the
same price as one RTW.
Good luch!!
