Ya know, Kate, you could have a normal decibel level doorbell, with an
extension bell in the back premises. I'm sure Alan could rig it up for
you. Heck, if James is a normal teenage male, HE could hook it up for
you, then you wouldn't need to be lifted out of bed when it rings.
Just a thought.

I'm quite certain that between them they could... But it might be more
bother than it's worth! ;) Still, Alan needs to replace quite a bit of
the telephone cabling within the house, to improve our broadband
reception (we need to move the master socket to somewhere the modem can
pick up better. Don't ask me the details!), and that will go in when we
do the hall floor, so I might see what he can do about the bell at that
point.
I did think seriously about getting one of those doorbells that work
like cordless phones: you know, with a base station and a repeater you
can take about with you... But I know what this place is like - it
would end up under the sofa or down behind the freezer!;)

We have a wireless doorbell. This house had a regular one, but
somewhere in the ceiling of the basement (most of which is now covered
with sheetrock) there is a break in the wire. So, I got a wireless one.
The part that makes the noise can be hung on a wall or just stood on a
table or shelf. I don't carry it around. I put it in a fairly central
location and leave it there. The chime (there are many, many choices)
we use is the Big Ben one, which is long enough that I do tend to hear
it and figure out that it must be the doorbell. ;-)
