Hello all,
below you can see the reply from the dress form manufacturer (n. b. the
owner/manager herself replied!) All in all, she says that the dress form is
a follow-up model of the classic wire model. It's basically wire, coated
with thermoplastic resin that is warmed electrically. For shaping the form
you need assistance. You'd plug in the form, wait for 5 minutes and then put
it on. Your assistant closes the form and puts bandages on you to shape the
it. When it fits properly, you pull the plug and wait for the form to cool
down. Then you can take it off by opening the back and front closures. You
are not supposed to change the shape after the whole thing has cooled down
since that might cause the resin to break. There is a shoulder and hip
mounting and you cover the whole thing with a jersey thing.
She points out that, however, the disadvantages of this system are:
- The resin is somewhat brittle and doesn't take heavy blows to well. (I
suspect this means that you're not supposed to drop it from great heigths,
such as rooftops etc. and that it's not a suitable toy for exuberant
children/grandchildren). If the resin breaks, however, there is no danger as
long as the wire is still intact (= not broken).
- Due to its flexibility, the form will never be as stable as other forms.
Moreover, the gaps in the meshing won't provide a base equal to that of
regular forms when it comes to draping and pinning.
- The form is not suitable for heavy historic costumes such as Spanish court
gowns etc. and you can't pull tight corsets on it (-> brittle resin).
- If exposed to great heat (sunshiny window, heating, fireplace) the resin
will become soft again.
All in all this dress form has its pros and cons, just as any other form. So

I have to ponder the whole thing. After all I can't rule out that one day
I'll want to make a corset or bodice that has to be pulled tight, although
I've learned in my after-birth course that any pressure on the abdomen puts
an intolerable strain on your pelvic floor. Ah well, since the dress form
will be on my b-day wishlist and that day is not until September, I still
have loads of time. Anyway, I still find the concept intriguing.

Die Thermobüste ist tatsächlich einer Weiterentwicklung der Drahtbüste, und
ist nicht mehr so ganz empfindlich gegenüber der altern Variante.
Das Drahtgeflecht ist mit einem Thermoplast ummantelt und Funktioniert
folgendermaßen:
Mittels einer Steckdose wird der thermoplastische Draht ca. 5 min. erhitzt,

eine Zwangsjacke an, eine zweite Person schließt die Verschlüsse hinten.
Dann wird mit Hilfe einer langen elastischen Binde das Drahtgeflecht an den
Körper angedrückt ( umwickelt von der zweiten Person). Wenn alles zur
Zufriedenheit anliegt ziehe Sie den Stecker aus der Steckdose und lassen die
Thermobüste wieder erkalten( Wichtig: nicht mehr versuchen den Draht zu
verformen, wenn das Geflecht kalt ist ,es kann brechen). Wenn alles erkaltet
und starr ist, alle Verschlüsse öffnen ( auch die vorderen) und aus der
Büste heraus schlüpfen. Die Büste hinstellen und wieder verschließen.
Fertig ist der Abgeformte Körper. Mit einem Schulter- und einer Hüftstütze
kann man das Ganze dann entwerde auf einem Holz- oder Metallständer
aufstellen und eine Jersey - Überzug darüberziehen.
Diese Büste ist die variabelste Büste die ich kenne und Sie läßt sich immmer
wieder neu anpassen.
Aber ich will Ihnen auch nicht die kleinen Nachteile dieser Büste
vorenthalten, denn sonst würde ich sie schlecht beraten:
1.Punkt : der Thermoplast ist im kalten Zustand gegenüber Stößen empfindlich
und kann brechen, was nicht weiter schlimm ist, solange der Draht
innendrinnen nicht kaputt geht.
2. Punkt : Diese Büste wir nie so stabile sein, wie eine andere verstellbare
Büste, da das geflecht in sich beweglich ist ( und auch sein muß, sonst
würde es wiederum zu leicht brechen). Durch die Großen Lücken haben Sie auch
nicht die Komfortabeln möglichekeiten eines festen Untergrundes zum
modelieren oder stecken.
3. Punkt: Die Büste ist nicht für sehr schwere ( z:B historische( Spanisch
Mode der Frau) Bekleidung geeignet, und auch Korsagen sollte mann dort nicht
auf extreme Spannung versuchen zu schnüren.
4. Sie kann sich verformen, wenn Sie zu lange in der Sonne, neben einer
heißen Heizung oder Ofen steht. Sie ist nunmal Thermoplastisch.
Genial war diese Büste für mich, als ich ein Rokkoko-Gewandung für meinen
Mann nähte, und dieser auf Geschäftsreise muße, denn so hatte ich seinen
Abdruck, um den Schnitt und die Linien zu Kontrollieren.
Sie sehen also, es ist schon eine tolle Büste, aber wie jede andere Büste
auch hat diese Ihre Vor- und Nachteile.
Sollte jemand aus Ihrem Bekanntenkreis aus der Nähe von Karlsruhe /Remiching
sein, dort sind wir am 16. Februar (also morgen) mit einer großen auswahl

Nachricht: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, zur Zeit bin ich auf der Suche
nach einer Schneiderbüste mit großen Variationsmöglichkeiten. Im Internet
stieß ich auf Ihre interessante Thermobüste. Bei einer Diskussion im Usenet
(alt.sewing) kannte allerdings niemand dieses Modell, bzw. es wurde mit
Drahtbüsten gleichgesetzt, wie sie schon seit Jahrzehnten im Handel sind.
Der Nachteil derselben wurde mit 'leicht verformbar, auch unabsichtlich'
beschrieben. Ich hatte allerdings den Eindruck, dass es sich bei Ihrem
Produkt um ein anderes Konzept handelt. Für nähere Informationen die über
das, was auf der entsprechenden Webseite zu finden ist, wäre ich Ihnen
ausgesprochen dankbar. Auch die Damen bei alt.sewing würden sich bestimmt
freuen, wenn ich ihnen weitere Informationen über dieses interessante

Yes, I was totally surprised about the openness of this lady myself. I
suspect they are still a small and young company - just the boss and maybe
two or three workers. I'm resolved to get my dress form from them, if I'll
ever get one. Maybe not the thermo form, but they've got others, so... And
they are not too far away from here, so maybe I could even collect it
personally. We'll see.
