:-))) I've just been in my shed doing a bit of woodwork and I was soooooo
pissed off with my the performance of the Plane I was trying to use, that I
started dreaming of buying a Lie- Nielsen one (or three). Having just
priced them on the internet (Gulp, Choke) I think, I'll just go buy a few
cheap plastic buttons and a punnet of seedlings instead. Sigh! I wish I
was richer.

Been to their website, looks like very nice stuff, although their planes
look vastly different from anything we used. However, what is the problem
with your plane? Perhaps I can help you? I should think that your blade is
sharp enough. However, are you sure that it has the right angle (the magic 5
degrees)? Did you adjust the piece of metal that is screwed onto the blade
to make the woodchips or shavings or what it's called in English curl.
Recommended is a distance of about 1 mm from the tip of the blade. What
else? Oh, I bet you know all this and I'm a nuisance. However, if I can help
you, please let me know. I can remember a number of things that prevent
satisfactory plane performance (including my clumsy hand as an apprentice).
;-) In the meantime, plastic buttons and seedlings aren't too bad. ;-))

I have to correct that, it's 25 degrees, sorry for the typo...

It's called a 'cap iron' in English .

Yep, it's set about that distance.

For some reason the Adjuster nut isn't moving the blade out through the
mouth beyond the sole plate. I've now pulled it apart and will give it a
really good inspection tonorrow, but there was nothing really obvious to
explain the problem when I pulled it apart.

:-)) Not sure about that :-)) To compensate for my failure to get the
Plane to work, after I posted here, I went shopping at the local woodworking
shop and spent a gift certificate I won for an entry I put into a show in
January. I won first prize, got the gift certificate and a big fat blue
ribbon for a laminated and steam bent hat stand I made.

Oh Kate, you can't imagine how disappointed I was when I went to your page
and had to find out that it was only a typo. ;-) Knowing that the Swiss are
somewhat special, I hadn't put it beyond them to name a sewing machine
'Louse'. OK, the Swiss are nothing compared to the Austrians (Austrians who
read this, please forgive me!). We had the privilege (?) to view some
Austrian tv advertising (a long and totally OT story) and found it daft
beyond anything to be seen in Germany (and we do get a lot of very silly,
boring, and annoying commercials here). So, why not call a small sewing
machine that can be hidden (perhaps even in your hair, if you've got a
Rapunzelesque touch) 'Louse'? OK, I don't know what's wrong with me, my
brain must be addled by the weekend. ;-)
