I have looked in the usual pattern books with no luck. Anyone know of a
source for patterns for those crazy polar fleece hats you see on the ski
slopes these days?

I found lots of patterns to choose from in Kwik Sew Patterns -
There is also McCall's M4985

Wild ginger.com has a free download called wild things that has a cute ski
hat in it. I used it as a starting point to make gnome hats for 2 grandsons
at Halloween. Very easy to work with and you madke them by measurements
instead of sm, med lg, etc. Have fun with it.
