I got this great email from my mother today and it reminded me of this young
couple who came into my work today. They were just a few years younger than
me.

It reminded me of them because the husband/boyfriend/whatever was a total
jerk to the lady.....I can't even begin to describe it. He had no respect
at all. I could just tell by looking at her that she was embarrassed and
really hurt by him. Afterwards I told my co-worker about it and I really
just wanted to cry for that lady. I hope she will be ok.......I just hated
that there was nothing I could do.

Here is the email, some people have probably heard it before:

-------------------------------------------------------------
The Value of a Woman
This is written in the Hebrew Talmud
It says:

"Be very careful if you make a woman cry, because God Counts her tears. The
woman came out of a man's rib. Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from
his head to be superior, But from the side To be equal. Under the arm to be
protected, and next to the heart to be Loved."

---------------------------------------------------

Thanks,

feels good to rant

Oh, there's stuff you could have done! Off the top of my head:

"Were you a fan of Ann Landers? My favorite line of hers: 'it's better
to be alone than to wish that you were.' "

"How long ago did you file?" (divorce papers)

"May I help, you sir? You mean...you are TOGETHER?!?!? YOU'RE WITH
HER?!?!?!?!?Gosh, I thought you were BY YOURSELF!"

"I've been researching PPOs. It's amazing; you don't even have to have
had a r'ship with the perp in order to get one."

"Ever listen to Dr Joy Browne?"

I'm sure others will have good ideas too...

DH and I were in a long line, at a theme park, for ice cream once. THe
couple behind us seemed to be dealing with some control issues. She said
she was going to have a scoop of chocolate in a sugar cone. He said he
wanted her to get the same thing he was having, a specialty frozen
drink. They argued about her menu choice for the 10 long minutes it took
for us to work our way up the queue. At one point she asked "Why can't I
just get what I want?" and he said "Because I want you to like the same
things I do." He was literally pleading, begging, whining,
ordering...anything to get her to agree to order the drink he wanted her
to have. It was quite odd, not to mention annoying.

We got up to the counter, and DH ordered three cones, turned around and
handed a chocolate scoop on a sugar cone to her and said "We're not all
like him. I personally think girls should enjoy the things they like."

Luckily DH is 6'4" while her beau was only about 5'11".

I had a friend whose husband treated her much like the woman in
MIchelle's original post was treated. He was such a jerk - my skin
crawls just thinking about him.

That is awesome! Good for you guys! Hopefully she learned to stand up for
herself. Actually.....sounds like she already knew how!

Whew! Hooray for DH! (Age of the subject couple? Sound like
teenagers.)

I was once leaving a dance (in my car, having left the bicycle at
home for once) and a women approached on the sidewalk. She looked like
she wanted to ask directions, and she did. This was in a suburban area,
9:30 pm, must've been spring because it was warmish but dark out.

Turns out she had walked there (about 5 miles) from the downtown
ball park where she and BF had attended a baseball game. She'd locked
her purse in the car trunk so it wouldn't get stolen in the game. BF
picked a fight, she walked out, and wandered around. This was in
Baltimore, and they lived in suburban DC. So she was out on the street,
no ID, no plastic, no cash, and years before cell phones. Ya know how
your local panhandlers always have the same version of the same story,
presented in the same tone of voice? She wasn't a panhandler, just
enduring some bad choices.

I told her I'd take her to the bus station. (Thought about taking
her to the cops, or even home with me.) Stopped and got a $20 out of
the wall, put her out at Greyhound with my business card and the cash.
She started sobbing. That was after my lecture on suffrage, personal
responsibility, and The Utility of the Fanny Pack.

She mailed me a check for the $20 a couple days later, along with a
thank-you note.

I believe that it's incumbent upon those of us with common sense to
help share it with our sisters. No one deserves to be belittled or
pleaded with or mistreated for wanting something different (ice cream)
or to be treated with respect.
