I need to get a reasonable sewing machine to my 12 yo DGD in the UK for
Christmas.
My regular server is down, so I am posting through Google, which I HATE
doing.
Anyhow, longtime readers will remember that my DD is currently living
on an Air Force base in the UK, together with husband and kids. Some
of you will also remember that she not only doesn't know which end of a
needle to put the thread in, she is determined not to learn.
I e-mailed to ask for suggestions for what Santa should bring, and she
said about the eldest "she is into sewing, so maybe some cross stitch
or something." AAAAAaaaarrrrrrrgh!! I wrote back, explaining that
there is a BIG difference, and lots of different levels as well. In
reply, I learned that the kid has been asking for a sewing machine, but
mother thinks she is too young for a good one. (There, there, Kate,
you already knew she is clueless).
So, DGD is in Southeast England, her Daddy has just signed up for four
more years over there (they love it), she wants a sewing machine, but
one which works in the UK will be useless when she comes back here
unless we can find a dual-powered one.
So, how do I get a reasonable, modestly priced, sewing machine to this
child? If I order it from over here, I can have it send to their base
P.O. box, or from there it can be sent to their home.
Heeeeeeeeelllllllpppp!!!!!

Hehehehehehe... I'm in school at the end of term for a week, teaching
10 & 11 YO's. tell her that I've taught those as young as seven to use
a machine, and learned myself at a similar age.

Where in the SE are they? I may be able to help. If they are staying 4
more years, may I suggest a used one that can be passed on when they
leave and sh'e gown up a bit, and then a nice new one when they are back

If you really want a new one for her, I have a couple of contacts with
good machines who will know the sort of thing to suggest, and whodo
internet sales, or I can look up a more local shop for you, and we can
get them to sort the money out later. If getting the machine/money
thing all looks too difficult, we can discuss further options off list.
A few of nice machines to look for are these:

They are in Thetford, Norfolk - Daddy is one of "those" Americans at RAF
Mildenhall.
Being a military brat, she is accustomed to change, and, give my DD her
due, she won't touch a needle but I did pass on the cooking genes and
the thrift shop/yard sale/car boot sale/ fleamarket genes. Therefore, I
would be perfectly contented to give a pre-loved machine provided it was
nicely spiffed up and properly gift wrapped. I think I would prefer
purely mechanical, although SIL is something of an electronics whiz
(that's what the USAF pays him for!) as well as being mechanically
marvellous. However, perhaps a simpler machine would be better until we
can find a teacher for her. Sigh. Wouldn't it be wonderful if her mom
would ship her over here for the summer so I can really teach her!
Getting payment over there is not a problem. As well as credit cards, I
can send a check on my U.S. bank, or, if necessary, for an extra fee my
local bank will write a sterling check on Barclays bank for me to mail
over. Of course, there is also wire transfer if need be.
Also, if you or someone else can find an acceptable machine for her, I
can always ship other tools and supplies from JoAnn.com to supplement.

OK I'll have an ask about and see what we can come up with in the way of
a good local shop selling pre-loved machines. If we can find her
something decent with a few nice utility stitches, we'll get summat
organized.

Great. Fantastic. Thankyouthankyouthankyou.
Just one thing. The price can't be too high, as she has two siblings
also needing Christmas prezzies. Younger brother apparently wants Star
Wars Legos (gotta go on line and have a look, I have no idea about them)
and little sis wants more Thomas track and towns, so we can't make
things TOO obviously uneven.
Thanks again.
