Hi All,

I'm in the process of making a pair of trousers for my DB, I've altered
the pattern to get a better fit for him, and now realised I have a
slight problem.

MY DB suffers from the same problem as me - a large rear. The alteration
I've put in is to slash across the trousers at hip-ish level and spread
at the crotch seam but not the side seam thus ending up with a wedge
shape insert (with thanks to Kate who coached me through this one a
couple of years ago for myself).

No problems there, but these are cargo pants, and there are patch
pockets on the rear. I've just realised that my wedge shape insert is
right through the pocket placement..... I made DB a pair of proto-shorts
to check the fit and didn't think to check the pocket placement :(

DB being a 4hr journey away and very busy is not available for a re-fit,
so how best to place these pockets?

Do I (a) line up the pocket with the marks for the top of the pocket
(now above my alteration) or (b) line up the pocket with the marks for
the bottom of the pocket (now below my alteration) or (c) put it
somewhere in the middle or (d) none of the above.

I suppose I could try draping the cut leg on the back of DH and placing
the pocket that way....... DH is much larger than DB so I can't borrow
him for anything other than loose draping

Any thoughts / suggestions / ideas welcome.

TIA,

Sarah

Lay the trousers out flat on the floor. Look at DH and measure how far
down from his waist the TOP of his pockets are... Lay your pocket out
at that distance from the waist, and at a pleasing distance from the CB
seam. Remember to angle the side seam edge of the pockets UP a little,
so the pocket tops form a shallow V. When it looks good, pin and sew.
If DB doesn't like them when he gets them, you can always change it
later! :)

Thanks Kate, thats a good plan, I can drape them on DH's rear when sewn to
double check the look of the pocket as well. Thanks also for the tip
about moving the pocket side seam - I assume thats to get a bit of
'wallet' room in the pocket?

Thanks again,

Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Do you still have a dart in the back? If so, the pocket is centered
over the dart, and about 2-1/2 inches down from the waistband. Part of
the dart will be inside the pocket.

Teri,

These cargo pants are yoked rather than darted - but I know exactly what
you mean from making my own trousers. I shall do some measuring and have
a fiddle when I get back to the sewing room, and see if I can persuade
DH to model for me before I sew the trousers up!

Now to find some time to sew in!

Thanks

Sarah
