Where are you? I'm in the UK, and we have members stretching from the
Australian Outback to the wilds of Katmandu... Via France, South Africa,
South America, and possibly Greenland and Antarctica!

Personally, I've bought fabric from Finland, the USA, Scotland, and just
up the road here... Patterns from Oz, and buttons from local charity shops.

Where do you WANT to shop?

Hi, there. I'd love to shop in my own hometown but we only have one
fabric chain here - Jo Ann Fabric. They're good but they really have
no competition so I don't know if I'm getting a deal or getting ripped
off. I'm in Pennsylvania. I'm willing to get fabric wherever I can get
good quality for a decent price - and a good selection. Any and all
ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Don't forget you've also got JoMar in Philadelphia... and G Street in the
DC area. And the NY garment district.

Some of the bigger stores offer a swatching service and/or a fabric club, like
Vogue in Illinois:

ay-Vogue-Fabrics-By-Mail-home-delivery-orderby0-p-1-c-28.html
(note trial issues at the bottom of that page -- and you'll have
to paste the URL back together.).

I sew a lot of shirts, so I buy ordinary shirt buttons by the gross at places
like Atlanta Thread and Banasch's -- that's a huge savings over buying carded
buttons.

You might also want to pick up some of the sewing magazines that are still
around like Threads and Sew News and Sew Beautiful and look at the advertisers
there. Threads puts their ad index online:
http://www.taunton.com/threads/pages/th_adindex.asp

Some of us also belong to one or more fabric coops... here's one I'm a member
of: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FabricsAndNotions/ -- this one tends to have
a higher percentage of "nice everday to nice dressy" than some.

And do you know about Pattern Review? http://www.patternreview.com

Welcome back to sewing!

If you want cottons of good quality, try eQuilter.com. Paul & Luanne Rubin
own and operate the store in Boulder, CO for years, beginning in the
basement of their home. Before the business really got too big, Paul used
to post on here.
I began buying fabric from them years ago, when I was searching for special
designs for my eldest DGD.
No, I am not affiliated with the business, except for being a very satisfied
customer.

Another site I often use is Nancy's Notions. She has some fabulous linens,
knits and blends of excellent quality. www.nancynotions.com, I think is the
correct address. In fact, she has a clearance sale online now.
Neither am I affiliated with her business, except I am a satisfied, loyal
customer of many years, & have never been disappointed.

HYH.
Emily
