Thanks. I really do appreciate the response. What I need is a couple
of ruled aluminum Fairgates that will last me awhile. I could use a new
square too since my DH borrowed mine and got putty all over it. They
are so much easier to use for pattern drafting because they are ruled on
both sides and that helps with precise placement. I have a vary-form
(it's great!) and was just looking for a decent price on some other
designer curves. Atlas Levy charges and arm and a leg for them. But
that might be the "rule" rather than the exception.

The Vari-Form is what I use, too. I can't imagine how I got along
without it; it has just the right hip curve, and the ends are just right
for armscye, neckline, and crotch curves, using my slide method.

The one thing I don't have is a T-square, but my cutting table mat is
gridded, which works well with clear rulers. My 30" clear ruler is the
one that gets the most use. It's 5" wide, and has a lip on the end that
is handy to hook on the edge of the cutting mat. And anyway, I use
patterndrafting software now, and rarely need to draft anything
clothing! :)

The "square" I was referring to is a ruled right angle aluminum square
similar to the kind carpenters use--- not a T-square. It comes in very
handy for all kinds of thing. I've been getting by with a 20" triangle
but, of course, it's not ruled and isn't quite as useful.

I first learned to draw professionally with pen & ink on vellum & mylar.
And though I later learned CAD as well, I prefer to draft/alter patterns
by hand because it's the quickest, easiest way for me. Frankly, I do
most of my pattern alterations right on my cutting table grid. But when
I really need to start from scratch or I have a large project, I have a
full size drawing table back from my college days. It's an old oak
antique beauty that dates from the turn of the century--- the kind you
most certainly would have seen in Frank Lloyd Wright's studio. My
father's company was getting rid of them and I was lucky enough to get
one for free. I bought a Mayline straightedge for it and it still works
great even after so many years and a few long distance moves. After
using CAD, the home pattern software seems very limited to me, though I
haven't really checked it out thoroughly for maybe a year or so.

Phae, look at the Fairgate Rule site; they have what are talking about,
in several sizes:

Yes, I'm familiar with their site but they do not sell retail. Thanks,
however. :)
