If you can find one, I would suggest an even older machine - a Singer
401 or 503. These are all-metal, all-mechanical machines with a good
selection of zig-zag stitches, and they will fit on the pegs of the
hinges in the cabinet. I am biased toward these machines for a good
solid workhorse machine that is not flimsy or weak in any way.
If you want to spend a lot more money, there are lots of newer machines
available, but they won't fit in the cabinet.
