OH that's terrible. Back pain is so debilitating. I have a wonderful
chiropractor but it's probably a bit far for you to come to Sydney to see
him! Be kind to yourself, rest, heat packs, maybe a massage. Oh and I'm
sure chocolate will help.....

Thanks all for the sympathy.
What I did was get Alan to massage it with some nice massage bar from
Lush. That, combined with both ibuprofen and paracetamol and a good
night's sleep, had dealt with 80% of it. I'm left with a little
stiffness and tollerable pain in the lower back, and stiff shoulders.
I'm hoping the swim will ease the shoulders: that's just from the
inescapable way one tenses up to ease pain elsewhere, and exercise
should shift it.
I think the amount of pain I felt was probably out of proportion for the
minor injury it is because I am a chronic pain sufferer and the pain
receptors switch into panic mode as soon as anything untoward happens.
It feels like what I did was strain the ligaments slightly at the
attachment points at the base of the spine, rather than strain the
muscle itself: too low for there to be much muscle whete it hurts, but
right where all the big muscels from the back and bum attach to the
pelvig girdle at the back. Pah! Beverly, you are right - backs have
not evolved enough!
I'm just annoyed that so little a movement could result in such pain for
a day, when my back is usually strong and relatively unaffected by the
fibro. Possibly an inducicious stretch at a funny angle after the
lifting of boxes of fabric in the loft the day before... I shall take
things cautiously for a day or two: no climbing the loft ladder or
heaving 50lb boxes of fabric! I have plenty to do without that, anyway.
I'd better go and get dressed and pack the swimming back. It's dull
today: maybe the outdoor pool will be empty except for us tough oldies! ;)

Oh dear, poor Kate! Glad to hear that you are better. Ibu and Paracetamol
are my best friends, too, when the headaches come. Reenactment has made me
appreciate them even more. Just think what we would have done in the dark
ages! Sit there and scream with pain, I suppose.

Oh yes, nothing like a good swim. DH and I had a night off last night, DD
stayed with her aunt and godmother, my DSIL (and seemed to enjoy it
immensly, as far as we could tell last night). So we were off to the spa or
what ever you want to call it. They've got a huge sauna area with all kinds
of indoor and outdoor saunas plus cooling devices such as buckets with cold
water you can pour over your head by pulling a string or an ice-cold little
pool where you just duck in and the water stings you like a million needles.
You would have liked the large pool with warm brine and all kinds of fancy
bubbles and counter-current systems. We both felt like new, although we
didn't swim a lot in a sportive way of speaking, more like floated. We
really needed that time out, we had been yelling at eachother at the
slightest mishap, he ahving worked not only the last three Saturdays but
also Sunday last and me with my aching ankle and nerves vibrating in
constant fear of DD next experiment. And the heat of the sauna did a lot for
our poor old bodies, too. ;-)
What came to my mind as far as resting positions go was that flat on the
back is nice, but perhaps you put your feet up so that both spine/thigh and
thigh/lower leg form right angles. It's supposed to be the ultimate
backpain-relief-position and helped me a lot during my 9 months. But Beverly
is right, our backs are just not evolved enough. Or Mother Nature says: 'So
how long have you been using this product? 40 years? 50 years? Ah yes, I
see. Well, of course you are aware that your warranty has expired about 10
years ago and thus we cannot give any refunds or replacements. You should
have popped your clogs several years ago, what are you complainig about? And
now, will you please get out of here, I'm busy with the weather. And don't
you dare complaining about that! YOU live in absolutely peaceful times.' ;-)
Anyway, get well soon, and get Alan to give you some more massages with
those wonderful Lush bars. ;-)
U.

We have a small sauna in the basement. It's sold as a "portable" one
and plugs into an ordinary outlet. It seats two, and my husband uses it
several times a week and claims that it helps him a great deal. I tried
it, but it was HOT!!! ;-) So I leave it to him. It does great things
for his skin, I notice.
