My back went out yesterday. Luckily, I didn't need the "thick pillow
under each elbow so you can knit or read lying flat" trick -- a half
hour or so after I'd leaned forward to pull a plug, I was sufficiently
improved to sit up, so I spent the day at the computer.
As I was struggling out of the typing chair, I told DH that I was
going to get my other cane for the sake of symmetry, and he said that
his late father's walker, which I'd recently gotten down out of the
attic on the grounds that if we ever needed it we wouldn't be able to
climb a ladder, would be equivalent to two canes.
That turned out to be *marvelous* -- I could walk so normally while
pushing a wheeled walker that I felt rather silly about using it --
until I let go, or had to lift it over an edge.
And I'm sure that the resulting lack of tension contributed to
recovering so fast that this morning I don't even need the cane. So
I'm going to go out and push the Culta-Eze around the garden; previous
back-aches have shown Culta-Ezing is equivalent to pushing a walker.

Back pains are a pain in the back, really. ;-) But my auntie, to turn 90
this December uses a wheeled walker (here it's called a 'Rollator') all the
time when she's going out and it's such a great help for her that I'm sure
to get one for my old age, too. ;-) Seriously, without the thing she sways
from side to side due to her various leg and hip ailments but when she's
behind that thing she easily outstrips me (OK, I'm not a fast walker due to
overweight and other things but still.) Many of her former colleagues have
envied her her mobility but once she tells them that it's only due to that
little gadget they shy away, afraid they will look 'old'. Really, as if
looks count when your personal freedom is in question. Glad to hear you're
doing better, anyway, and keep on rolling! ;-)

I have started looking into buying a Rollator for myself. Two DSs already
use one and they are 5 & 10 years younger than me. When I visited one
earlier this year, I "borrowed" hers to go out to the mailbox for her, while
she was doing something in the house. It made walking so easy, I decided,
That's just what I need for taking walks, one of my favorite activities when
it is cooler weather.

Oh, if you get yourself one, go for the Topro Troja or some such item:
http://www.topro.no/en/area.asp?AreaID=1&menuItem=51
As far as I have heard the Topro is the Rolls Royce among the whole crowd. I
tried it before I made the whole family join in giving one to aunty. NAYY as
folks usually say here. ;-)
