I'm wearing some dressy slacks to an evening affair. My shoes have 2"
heels. How long should I hem the slacks?
TIA

If a mere male might offer an opinion, when I mark the length of my wife's
trousers or slacks, I reckon to get the front just comfortably brushing the
front of the shoe, so the back of the hem should be about 1/2" below the
top of the heel at the back, IYSWIM. Go any longer and you risk stepping on
the back of the hem, or worse, finishing up with ragged bottoms so beloved
of today's youngsters. Shorter and, well, looks like an ill-fitting pair
you've bought from a charity shop.

Richard, I know you're responding that way because a recent
thread drift. Now, take a deep breath and remove that log
from your shoulder. ;-)

For flat shoes, I like the back hem to just meet the spot
where the heel meets the shoe. I never wear high heels, but
for those I would definitly want the hem in front to brush
my instep, and the back to be about 1 to 1 1/2 inch off the
floor.

YMMV,

It wasn't motivated by what you refer to, honest! And yes, I did take the
smiley on board. It was as someone who's never worn 2" heels, nor cuban for
that matter, not even on stage. Even as a pantomime dame or the hairy fairy
in Cinderella, it was a pair of split sole dance boots! :-)

When I see soooo many ladies around who need a best friend to whisper in
their ear 'That outfit, trousers, top, those colours really aren't for you'
I am often led to wonder how many men pay real interest and attention in
their partners' appearance, or how many women ask or value their opinion.
It's not intended as a sexist remark, and I would please ask others not to
take it as such, but I genuinely believe a lot of women just don't think
men have any understanding of fashion and womens' clothing.

I'd like to think I know my wife's body shape, what colours suit her, and
more importantly what doesn't. She knows my most damning phrase when she's
clothes hunting is 'Well, it shows you've got a sense of humour!'

I recollect many, many years ago I was in a department store waiting
outside the changing rooms, and a youngish quite shapely mum came out to
hubbie and child, with a top that was just too small. It looked pulled and
unsightly on her, but she was thrilled because she had managed to get into
the smallest size. Hubbie sort of looked her over and more or less told her
what she wanted to hear. I longed to go over and say 'That would look a
million times nicer if you went just one size larger', but I'm certain I
would have had no thanks at all.

So I offer my comments as a mere male who isn't supposed to understand
these things......

:-)

I for one welcome your comments!! If Hubby had any inclination to sew,
it would make it SO much easier on me!! However, he is done with sewing
other than his mending, which I told him i refused to do since he took
care it quite nicely before we were married (he was in the Navy, so he
had to keep his uniforms in good shape).

I have drafted him for an hour or so this weekend to help me get
accurate measurements so that I can start drafting my own patterns to
take into consideration all my body quirks (slightly potato shaped -
going away as I lose more wight, left shoulder a bit higher than the
right due to upper back scoliosis, etc.). That's about as much as I can
get from him, unless I ask him directly how something looks or what he
HONESTLY thinks about something....he has learned in 10 years that I
actually mean it when I say *honestly* and doesn't hold back, so I know
I'm getting the truth from him.
