I have a kenmore sewing machine model 385. 17628 For some insane reason I
took the
bobbin holder out and now cannot replace it properly---it keeps moving and
the
thread just all tangles up and I am unable to sew. I cannot find
instructions in
the manual. I would greatly appreciate help---I am about ready to take a
sledgehammer to the machine. Thank you

If this is a Type 15 machine, the bobbin holder has a sort of finger
sticking up... This needs to go into a little notch in the shuttle
(which is the the thing with the hook on it that catches the thread).
This notch will be at the top of the shuttle. Make sure the needle is
UP out of the bobbin area, insert the shuttle and make sure that finger
fits into the notch. Push it in firmly. Some will click into place.

Before you put the bobbin case back into the machine, make sure the
bobbin is correctly wound and loaded into the bobbin case. Make sure
the thread from the bobbin is fully under the leaf spring on the side.

Kate thank you so much for replying. I do not think I have this type of
machine.
I do appreciate your help and kindness. I may have to find a sewing repair
shop
though I am trying not to have to spend the money. Thanks again

If the machine has a front or side loading bobbin in a separate bobbin
case, it's a type 15 or derivative thereof. The other sort are drop in
bobbins, that drop into the bobbin case from a hole in the top of the
machine bed and covered by a sliding plate.

Both types of machine have bobbin cases, but the type 15 ones are
removeable and the others stay in the machine.

Here, this might help:

From your reply to Kate, it appears you have a machine with a "top-
loading" bobbin system.

If you look at the bobbin case, you will notice that it has a small notch
with a small "bump" on the right side of the notch that goes toward the
front of the machine. When you look at the rotary hook, you should also
notice the "bobbin case stopper", a small silvery metal piece that
slightly protrudes over the rotary hook. This would be at the lower right
side of the opening under the needle plate. When inserting the bobbin
case, the notch fits around the bobbin case stopper and the small bump on
the side of the bobbin case will be to the left of the bobbin case
stopper.
