I have shared my tale of woe over on alt.sewing.mach-embroider. I
actually had five different USB-to-serial cables here, then found that
my problem was with a defective main board on the embroidery machine.

Does that not just make you sick?!? Theses places like Singer ought to
be ashamed to take advantage of people like that. Boo, hiss-hiss.

For the same price you can pick it up at Target ($14.99), if you have
one near you or order from 411inkjets with the usual stuff before and
after the address. They are $7.95 there with free shipping for a 10
footer.
