Hi
I hope someone can tell me (or direct me to a good source) the foot
lift distance on a Singer CG-500.
I often sew thick layers of denim, and before I buy one of these, I
want to know the distance under the foot , that is, what is the
maximum thickness of material it will accept under the foot ?
Thanks in advance for your time

Ron Anderson probably has more information on this beast. I've only seen
one. It appeared to be the same as most of the low-end Singers. One of
the kids in one of our classes a couple of years ago had one. It
apparently was nothing but trouble and she had a different machine for
the next class.

It is no different than any of the low end Singer machines. Basically the
same machine with a tank body that will do nothing for the sewing. To put a
figure on it 5-7 mm before the tension release engages.
Sewing over the hump in jeans hems is more technique than machine. Most home
machine and even many industrials choke on going from 2 layers to 8 all of a
sudden.

With an assist from my handy dandy "Jean-a-ma-jig" I hemmed
two pairs of jeans yesterday. At the inside leg seam (at
the flat-felled seam) the thickness of the hem was 9 layers
of denim. My 1960 Singer 401A didn't miss a beat. I start
just before the seam with the hump-jumper *behind* the
presser foot, sew over the seams, then place the hump-jumper
in front of the foot, with the slot centered where the
stitching will go and sew until the presser foot passes over
the hump. The idea is to keep the presser foot level going
over the thick fabric. Works perfectly. Before I bought a
commercially made device, I always saved the scrap of
cut-off hem and used it behind and in front of the presser
foot when hemming thick jeans. I also steam and hammer the
combined thickness.

Can't tell you about the machine, but do you know about sewing hammers?
No, I'm not kidding.

I use a plastic-faced deadblow mallet for jeans.
