my friends host an annual Derby party, with a hat contest. is
there a big ol' floppy brim hat pattern out there anywhere? i'm
sure i'll have no problem overdoing the fluff (a dozen huge
satin ribbon roses & streamers to *there*...), but i need a base
& i'd just rather not use a craft store straw hat. i think a big
brim hat in linen would look better.

Have you looked at Wild Ginger? They have a wide brimmed sunhat that
I'm sure you could adapt.

Have you tried the big 3/4 pattern companies? I spent an hour or so looking
at pattern books yesterday and I saw one for hats, I may go back and get,
but don't remember which company, maybe Simplicity? It had a fairly wide
brim which I need for protection against the sun.
