I made some for our kids by adapting the information I had for building
small parachutes for our 'parabears'. The key to sewing together a ball
is the use of 'gores' (basically a triangle with curved sides).

.... you will find lots of information on gores and it also gives links
to a downloadable calculator and an online calculator. Just plug in the
diameter and number of gores you want and use the resulting figures to
draw out your pattern on paper. I actually drew mine up in a CAD program
but it could just as easily been done with a paper, rule and pencil.
I made ours using four gores per half ball and filled them with rice and
they worked quite well.
