My wife has a 25 yr old Singer Stylist 834 110-120vlts sew.machine that
has worked great up till now. Teenager was using it and now the needle is
hitting the lower bobbin housing mechanism everytime. Someone said maybe
it's the "timing"?
Would be so grateful if anyone knows how to take this apart and work on it
myself-- I'd be a SEWING HERO!
Thanks!

As for ""rough timing"" estimate... and peace of mind..... that
is easy enough for you to check
======================
0- install a new, good needle
1 - set machine to SS
2- open bobbin case cover and locate the sharp thread hook.
3- turn machine hand crank manually (in the proper direction)
until the needle goes down to its lowest position and then when
you just see it start to move up stop turning
4 - the sharp thread hook should be pretty darn close to the
needle not quite to it but just getting ready to go behind the
needle.
5- turn the hand crank just a little and watch the needle hook
slip behind the needle

If this was what happened i doubt needle /hook timing is the
problem.

If something very different happened and is the timing you may
have infamous singer plastic gear rot/crumble.
======================

Well first i reccomend trying to isolate the trouble with as
little take apart as possible.
Problem may just be something simple as jammed or bent piece in
the bobbin area etc bla bla bla....

Q1 - What did the teen say happened (or did) right before the
problem started ?

Try operating the machine with no needle ....

Q2 - What happens if you remove the needle and then turn over the
machine manually at first ?

Q3 - Do the feed dogs move correctly ?

Q4 - does the thread hook move around and around ?

Q5- If no odd or binding problems then run the machine at
various settings like, SS, ZZ, reverse, and varying stitch
lengths. Does it run smoothly or sound different than it did when
it ran fine ?
Any crunching , binding or grinding ?

My first thought when you mention 25 yr old **singer stylist**
suddendly stops working is the crumbling nylon gear problem :(
If your thread hook and feed dogs are moving properly then this
probably will not be the problem. I will hope that is not your
trouble.

Sorry, (#2) should have included remove the needle plate

you will need to remove the needle plate to see the hook and
needle

Here's a timing guide for the Singer 600 series. It may help as most
of that vintage have the same adjustments.
