Hi Kate,
in another post you wrote:
I cannot add much to what Beverly has said, but it might be worth a look
UNDER the machine! My Singer 15-88 has the adjuster for the feed dogs
undernieth.
I never knew this. what does it look like? or should it be obvious? (when I
get a chance I will look, the poor girl is ready to move at the moment so I
don't want to undo all my work).
Thanks so much!

Do you have the manual? If so, look for this widget in the section on
DARNING! I never darn anything if I can help it, so it look me months
to find it! Duh! ;P
If you have no manual, just lift the machine up and at the front, in
front of the bobbin cse, it the adjuster. I'd scan and send a copy of
the manual to you, but my scanner is off line at present.

Thanks Kate, no need to go to the trouble even if you could, I can find
that. unfortunatley I don't have the manual, but I did print off a "free"
one for a 15-91 and it has been ok. mostly I didn't get the threading and
bobbin winding. I have them figured out now!
Thanks,

On mine, there's a large knob/screw underneath the bed that pulls out
which losen the feed dogs from their drive mechanism. Now, if it's
never been used, as it was on one of my 15s, it may be quite difficult
to loosen, requiring oil and gentle but persistant persuasion :)
