I bought yards upon yards of clear vinyl and i was wondering if anyone
could tell me how i could print onto it. at first i thought i'd make a
stencil and paint it on with some sort of enamel paint, but the print
i'd like to use would be circut board, and the idea of making a circut
board stencil is daunting, to say the least. also, that brings up the
question of whether or not the paint would chip...
does anyone know if i could silk screen? lithograph? maybe heat
transfer, and if so, how would i obtain heat transfer papers in size
extra, extra, EXTRA large? if unavoidable, i'll have to resort to
stenciling/painting on the design, but does anyone have any suggestions
as to what paint would be somewhat waterproof and not peel off?

On a (somewhat) different note, does anyone know if it is possible to
DYE the vinyl. it seems as though the color would have had to be
incorporated while the vinyl was setting, but would it be at all
possible to paint on a sort of transperant hue?

thank you!

There was a fad in the seventies to use Rit dye on eyeglasses, (begun
by Rit of course). The drawback was the Rit dye would dye the glass
as well, not just the frames. Not sure how it will work on the vinyl,
but I would take a six inch swatch and try it. it can't hurt and won't
cost more than about three bucks to find out.

as to your first question, I think I would find out about having your
design printed on tissue and backing the vinyl with it. Maybe even
iron the tissue from the back side then peel it off. again, sounds
like you are going to have to experiment to learn what you can do with
it.

What is your final goal? Kitty

once i've figured out how to make the vinyl circutboard print, i'd like
to make a victorian-style bustle skirt out of it. you'd have to wear
little shorts or something underneath, of course, or a slip, but i
think the bustle in the back will have a nice "oragami-sewing" kind of
effect.

I once silk-screened some naugahyde. Worked pretty well. Heat-set ink
which got baked in a cheap old oven in the basement of this sportswear
house. I kept an eye on it.

I don't know how many paints would stick to vinyl. Krylon Fusion comes to mind;
it's specifically designed for painting plastics, You can get it at places like
Home
Depot. According to the Krylon web site, it's suitable for hard vinyl; it'll
probably
crack given the flexibility of clear vinyl.

You can get inks that will stick to vinyl from an art store. You could try
using
ink instead of paint - they are more flexible. You might even find a suitable
ink that will dry transparent and you could paint over large areas instead of
dying.

Google could answer a lot of your questions.
