Cotton sateen might be better: it'll slide on and off more easily.

As this is for a kid, I'd go with the fusible: get the stuff with
threads sewn into it. Pad stitching the non-fusible hair canvas type in
is too much work for someone who will grow out of it in a year...

Gaudy metallic trims are not often washable. I buy mine from an Indian
shop in Wembley - not a lot of help for you, I'm afraid! I also buy
excellent gold and silver cast metal blazer buttons from Dainty Supplies
in Washington New Town, Tyne & Wear... Washable, excellent quality,
good and heavy, and cheap! :)
