I have never quilted. For fun and to experiment i am making a
diamond shapes pillow cover. That is checker board pattern of
swatches turned 45 degrees and then cut to pillow shape pattern
to make cover.

the question is regarding the assembly of checker board pattern
(? a classic quilting design i believe ?)

i will make 4" checker pattern so i have a two stacks of 4 3/4
" square pieces (Burgundy/Navy). i need my 4" checker board
assembly to be (6 x 6) to cover the pillow in the diamond style.

I tried some practice square pieces to figure out how to assemble
the checker board and ran into problems at the seams/corners etc

1. tried building the square from center out. join two pieces,
join two other pieces join those two etc... but the seams cause
problems.

A. if i overlap i get a not so pretty bump/pucker at the
corners

B. if i stagger the seams that is push the allowance flopped
one way and one seam allowance flopped the other way.... it is
dificult to stop the under side seam flaps from being shifted by
feed dog when it comes through. so you get jumble or racking of
the seam material at the corners again.

2. tried making long strips of squares and then join two strips
but then the stitches are not straight and i still get seam join
problems

so is ther a proper way to join the squares into a strong and (
**square** ) checker board shape.

thanks for any help,
robb

Make small squares, then sew them together into successively larger
squares...then sew those together, etc. until you're all done.

Thanks for hep Irene,

So i am making it too complicated then.

what about the seams do you press open of fold over and press
them ?

and do you start from one end/edge and sew across or start at
the overlap corner and work out ?

i seemed to get beter results (stitch straightness) if i started
where the seams meet and sew out to edges but that seems like a
poor finish with all the loose danglies

thanks again ,
robb

The latter two methods you tried will work, and are, in fact, the ones
usually recommended by quilting teachers.

You just need to practice, practice, practice.

Oh, and press the seams flat before you cross them with another
seamline. Sew more slowly, use pins or basting spray.

Or you could mark the seamlines and sew by hand, thus avoiding a lot
of seam problems.
