I have just been given this wonderful machine but do not have a manual for
it. Can anybody help?

I Katherine. For a nominal fee, you can download an instruction manual
for just about any sewing machine, new or old, at the following
website:

http://www.sewusa.com/index.htm

I've downloaded two manuals, one for an old Viking machine and the
other for an old Bernina sewing machine. I just paid through Paypal
and purchased the electronic copy versus a hard copy. It was
straightforward, easy and secure. Hope this helps!!
