Help me think this through.

Monks new favorite thing is this great New Zealand series Hairy Maclary. Its
about dogs and cats so I love it too. I thought I'd make him a Hairy Maclary
outfit - using some inkjet compatible fabric i have. I'm thinking a tshirt,
with a big "hairy maclary" on it, a pair of jeans with a small applique of
each dog and its name and its "tag line" embroidered beneath (my machine
does letters well on non-knit fabrics) - if you think I'm nuts, check out
the dogs here - they are awesome and funny:

I'm thinking that because I'm using the inkjet fabric, and jeans that it
might be really cool to do some reverse applique. i think the jeans would
fray around the dogs, eliminating my need to put some sort of border on the
injet fabric. I also won't need to photoshop out the rest of the pictures -
the hole in the jeans can be the frame and shape that i want the applique to
be.

I found these reverse applique instructions that are quite good -
http://www.purrfection.com/projects/reverseapplique.htm - I think i'll use
them except i think I want the space between the stitching and the hole
wider so that there will be room for the jean fabric to fray. I also will
not satin stitch on top because that would defeat the purpose.

will this also work on the knit t-shirt? i think that would also look cool
