needle."??? That description does not correspond with the
threading process for any of the three different sergers I
own.

Do you have the manual? Sounds very much like a threading
error. Re-thread from scratch, following the order for
threading in the manual, using different colored threads for
*each* looper and *each* needle. Do a test. Compare the
results to the illustrations in the manual. That's the
best way I know to diagnose a serger problem. YMMV
