Hey All,
OK. Now that computer issues are mostly resolved. I have a present for all
of you from my recent trip to Iowa State U.
http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLanding.action?c=o3492qh.8kcdoo6x&x=0&y=-hrt6a5&localeid=en_US
DH and I had some time to kill while the boy was busy with stuff. So we
went to the art museum that is right on campus.
http://www.museums.iastate.edu/BAMCurExb.htm They currently have two
exhibits that pretty much all of us here would love. ;)
One is all about Japanese culture and clothing from the 18th and 19th
centuries. Some really nice kimono. I was a little disappointed at the
vagueness of most of the description of the kimono. But I am going to
hazard a guess that a lot of them came from third party sellers and who
knows when/where. But they are pretty to look at. They had a few cotton
ones (that I didn't get pictures of) most of the ones in the pictures are
silk. The one rayon one that I took a picture of is marked as such. They
also had some gorgeous snuff boxes, and emperor and empress dolls, and some
stunning prints. I mainly stuck to the clothing for y'all though.
Then the exhibit next door is all the work of Priscilla Sage. She is a
fiber artist, and does just amazing things. Take your time looking at the
captions on the pictures. I included as much info from the plaques that
went with each piece as I could. Just unbelievable some of the things she
does with fabric.
Then I threw in a couple pictures from the Reiman Gardens. 14 acres of
garden goregeousness just at the edge of campus. The gardens were just
beginning to wake up for the season when we were there. Although, the
apple trees had little apples all over them.
I also put a couple fun shots from downtown Ames, IA. Just things that made
me chuckle. ;)
Have fun!

OOOOOHHHH my how pretty. The Japanese kimomo's are yummy to look at. How
could you restrain your self from touching. The Pricilla Sage pieces are
also so beautiful.
Love your bit of whimsey.

It was really a trial not to touch things. lol I found myself pointing out
details and explaining what the different colors and symbols mean to
DH....then realized I must really not trust myself not to touch because I
was gesturing with the back of my wrist. You know how you do when your
hands are wet, or gooey with something? lol Apparently, on some
unconscious level, I couldn't even trust myself to point towards them with
my fingers. ;)
The sculptures were even more challenging not to touch. You can walk right
up to them the way they are hung. Nose to nose with them if you want to.
But then you can't see the whole thing if you do that.
I could have stayed in those two exhibits all day long. Quite happily just
wandered around all day. lol
And I thought of everyone here while I was wandering. Knew I had to share
pictures with y'all!!
They'd never get us out if we all showed up there. LOL

Wow! Wow! Wow!!! I'm no connoisseur of Japanese textiles,
but even I can tell those are fabulous And the Priscilla
Sage stuff *almost* has me convinced to take up piecing and
quilting. Lovely!
You are goofy with the other pictures, but you knew that.

It was a really nice collection. The embroidery on that black obi was just
amazing. Wish I could have gotten closer to the black kimono to take more
pics of the embroidery on there. With the low light, zooming was tricky at
best. But it was scrumptious.
Here's some more on Priscilla Sage... This first link is to a photo show
from the Des Moines newspaper on the exhibit I went to
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=D2&Date=20081220&Category=NEWS&ArtNo=812200808&Ref=PH&Profile=1047
This one has a cool ultra close up of one of the sculptures so you can see
how she stitched it http://www.artknowledgenews.com/Priscilla_Sage.html
This one has a nice bio of her towards the bottom of the page
http://www.macniderart.org/intertwined.html
If her work will be displayed anywhere near you, try to go see it. The
pictures are gorgeous, but her work is just........WOW in person. The
slightest poof of air will make them move, and almost dance. They almost
seem alive. And then, from our perspective, the WORK that went into them
is just incredible!
BTW, did you notice I left a note special for you on the pics of the
purplish/blue everyday kimono?? lol

Well yeah. lol DH and I were really puzzled what a pantorium might be.
You can see the sign from all the way down the street. You can't see,
until you are close to the front of the place, that it's a dry cleaner.
Amazingly enough though, they dry clean things other than pants! ;)
