I've been doing some sewing for grand-daughters who are between 2 and
(almost) 10 and I've been having a problem with the top falling off the
shoulders. I've been careful not to stretch the opening, I've stay
stitched, I've tried a couple of different patterns. The size 3 pattern
was a woven fabric, the size girls medium was a knit. The body of the
tank top is okay, the armhole opening is good, but the scoop neck of the
tank seems too big. How can I make these things fit the girls? It would
seem to be so easy to sew these but it's driving me crazy.

Just remember that a pattern is marked on the front if it is to be made with
knits only. Otherwise it is for woven fabric. If it is being made from
woven fabric you could use bias tape to inclose the raw edges. Hope this
helps.

Judie,

Could just be either (a) a badly drafted pattern or (b) a style that
doesn't suit your GDD's body shape(s).

I'd suggest hand-drafting a modified pattern with wider shoulders
(making it wider towards the neck) or maybe a higher back and / or front
in the scoop. and giving that a whirl.

It goes without saying that a woven pattern should be used with wovens,
and a stretch pattern with stretch fabric.....

One thing to try if you have a couple of tops already made, and slipping
off shoulders, is to either add (a) some decorative horizontal ribbons
at strategic points across the chest and back, linking the shoulder
straps together so they don't slip down - make it a fashion feature! or
maybe (b) adding some contract fabric into the scoop to raise the back
and front, to make it less likely the shoulders will slip - again make
it a fashion feature - add trim and or embroidery. At least you will be
able to salvage the work so far.

Dear Judie,

To make the scoop neck smaller, simply draw a vertical line at the
center front neck up the amount you want to change it. Then re-draw
the scoop, with the lowest point at the new center front.

That may not be the problem, however. If the shoulder is falling off,
it's probably because the designer used a bodice intended to have a
sleeve, and just left off the sleeve and changed the neck. You
shouldn't do that. A scoop neck, sleeveless top should have the
armhole drawn about 1/2 inch in from the armhole seam for a sleeve.
This ensures that it won't fall off.

Teri, Who has been gone and missed everyone. I now have my computer
back.

Teri,

It's good to have you back!

I think I have a Kwik Sew pattern here somewhere and will trace off an
entirely new pattern for all three girls and see what happens. If
nothing else I guess I can add some gathers to the center front and back
so these can be worn. One of the patterns I used was Butterick and the
other was McCalls but since they are all the same company now, who knows?

I very much dislike the fact that the new patterns seem to be printed so
badly, the ink is faint and in some places almost non-existent. With the
lack of a printed seam allowance, I sometimes have a difficult time
figuring out what they have allowed as a seam allowance since it seems
to vary.

Welcome back and thanks for the advice,

Judie
