thanks to all for the reccomendations.
My Readers Digest complete guide arrived.
Lots of great stuff in there even though it is printed in '78.
Was ther any significant advances in sewing or fabric technology
since '78
seems like i should have looked for something published in the
mid to late 80's to get good coverage of stretch materials and
engineered (not natural) fabrics ??
or is '78 going to have all i will need ?
thanks again,
robb

IIRC, later editions cover sergers, but leave out tailoring to make
space for it. I may not be completely correct about that, but I think
that newer topics were covered in later editions at the cost of removing
other parts, and you may find it useful to have two copies - your 1978
edition, and a later edition.
There are other sewing guides on the market, many highly specialized,
but for an all-round basic, easy to use and understand guide, you can't
beat the RD Sewing Guide. The book division of RD out-performs all
other divisions in terms of quality.

I've not come across any that I haven't yet been able to sew, but then I did
a stretch course in the 70s when stretch first became "the" fabric of the
time and the same principles that applied then still apply now to stretch
fabric the only difference between now and then is that I now have an
overlocker.
Overlockers are such a new experience for me that I bought 2 books on them
but I find the most useful of those two is the one that Kate recommended.

i decided to just read through "RD:complete" over the
weekend....
with RD books i always think of condensed, skips alot of
interesting stuff etc *but....*
i really like the content and style. i particularly like the
sections on sew equipment, needling / thread guide and fabric
guides
another question though.
in the needling guide the needle sizes mentioned range from 9
(crepe work) to 16-18 ( heavy coat, vinyl upholstery, heavy
canvas etc)
what am i suppose to sew with these 120/19 needles i have ?
just wondering,

http://www.taunton.com/threads/pages/t00185.asp
" Determine needle size by fabric weight. Choose a size 60/8
needle for lightweight fabrics similar to georgette or
organdy; a 70/10 or 80/12 needle for medium-weight jersey,
Lycra, linen, or calf leather; a 90/14 and 100/16 for heavy
fabrics like jeans, vinyl, upholstery or canvas; and 110/18
or 120/19 for very heavy fabrics."
So, use it for heavy denim, canvas, Sunbrella and the like.
