Do you have the felt in place at the base of the spool?

Hi Peter,
That's what a little circle of red felt is for. Put it on the thread
post under your spool. Your machine jerks on the spool and spins it,
unwinding an extra loop of thread which tightens around the thread post.
The felt provides enough friction that the spool doesn't spin as easily.
If you don't have a felt circle in with the machine notions, try a scrap
of cloth.

Peter,
If the felt doesnt help try taping a large eyed needle after the thread
post, like the ones used for sewing up knitted garments this keeps the
thread up and away from the bottom of the spool

Even new machines have posts to put the spools on you know ;-)

Is your thread catching on the little cut slot they put on the edge of a
reel to hold the end of the thread when it's off the machine? I've had
that happen - and boy it's annoying! The answer to this one is to invert
your spool. Mind you the new style reels with double tops and bottoms
where you can wind the thread and it grips it negates this particular
problem.
