When I get the Dyson out, Sugar Puff gives it and me a filthy look and
switches into I AM IGNORING YOU mode... Then vanishes off upstairs to
fur up the duvet if I get too close to her with it.

Cornflake gives me a look of deep reproach, the Dyson one of total
terror, and escapes up the garden for hours befor I even plug it in
unless we catch him amd someone cuddles him while it's on.

Someone I knew had one of those built-in hoovering systems in their
house... It never seemed to pick up as much as even an ordinary
cylinder vacuum cleaner, and the potential for expense if anything like
a chunk of Lego or a needle got wedged in one of the pipes scared me off
the idea for good. Imagine having to remove part of a wall and repair
it because a Lego brick stuck in a pipe!

I gave in and hired a nice lady to come in and dust and vacuum once
every two weeks. She brings her own vacuum cleaner, although she uses
my dusters, detergents etc. Once every two weeks is enough in this
household as there are only the two of us, no animals (dh is my only pet
nowadays)so it is easy enough to keep up between times.

Although I'm down to a household of one, I really miss the
nice lady I had come in weekly when we had my DMIL living
here. I'd so much rather be doing ANYTHING but housework so
I tend to let things go. But knowing she was coming forced
me to keep things picked up better. Now, every social
occasion is a mad scramble to get things tidied up. :-(

That sounds about par for my house. I'm clean, but disorganized...

I envy you. Years and years ago, I had a woman who came once a week to
clean my little apartment and do my laundry. She was a treasure. She
put three kids through college, too. But now, I don't know of anyone I
could trust. A friend had a cleaning service, and then had a burglary
where someone came in through her back door and went directly to the
shelf in the closet where she had her grandmother's silver service, and
took it. I've heard of other incidents like that around here. Even if
the service is bonded, and if they don't break anything or ruin the
surface of antique furniture, you can't prove that they told a brother
or boyfriend or spouse how to get in and where the valuables were hidden.

I would love to know a nice lady who cleans.
